CORK CITY, Ireland - A huge cache of cash, including euros, sterling and U.S. dollars has been seized in a number of raids carried out by the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), and local Gardaí in Cork City and Cork County.
The raids took place Tuesday morning.
The CAB estimates the cash in various currencies seized is equivalent to 150,000 euro in value.
A home in West Cork was the scene of one of the raids.
Two more were conducted on business premises in Cork City.
The CAB investigation follows an extensive Fraud Investigation conducted by local Gardaí in West Cork centering on fraudulent claims in excess of €3.5 million made under the Drug Refund Scheme.
In addition to the cash seized, was a quantity of gold and silver coins, including a collection of South African Kruggerand coins.
A number of safes were also being searched.
A quantity of documents (including title deeds for properties), computer devices, etc. are additionally being examined by investigating officers.
No arrests have been made at this stage and the investigation is ongoing, the CAB said in a statemment late Tuesday.
