CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Oct. 9 (PIA)-The Modern Nanays of Mindanao (MNM) in partnership with the City Government of Cagayan de Oro through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) urged all mothers to experience babywearing with the use of recommended carriers in attending to their baby's needs and other tasks at the same time.

During the International Babywearing Week (IBW) celebration on October 7, City Councilor Alam Lim, who represented Mayor Oscar Moreno, said babywearing is an old Filipino tradition. "Nanays usually put slings around their body to carry their babies and at the same time free their hands for whatever chores they could do," he added.

About a hundred mothers from the city convened during the celebration to highlight the importance of knowing the safe way to carry their babies, identifying different types of carriers based on the child's age, size and weight, enforcing positive parenting, and guiding children on new technology.

Sanlyn Aclo of MNM said these mothers have been enjoying the benefits of babywearing which include raising happy babies since carried babies cry less, becoming confident parents, and ensuring comfort and convenience while nurturing children.

Ensuring safety

On babywearing safety, Marie Jade Cacayan of MNM said parents or baby wearers should always make sure that the child's airways remain open at all times.

Thus, the babies should be kept in an upright position, high enough on the wearer's body to monitor breathing.

Carriers should also provide adequate support for the infant's developing neck and back.

"Always inspect carriers for wear or damage before use. Examine it for weak spots, loose stitching, worn fabrics," Cacayan added.

Baby wearers must also practice the best carrying position to ensure safety of the baby.

Types of carriers

To guide mothers and baby wearers on the type of carrier to use, Marites Rojas of MNM enumerated the different types of recommended carriers that wearers could choose from.

For newborns to babies weighing 7-8 kg, parents or caregivers may choose wraps that come in woven, stretchy and hybrid materials.

Wearers can also opt for ring slings which can be used for newborns to pre-school-aged children. "This is not recommended for people with back problems or sensitive neck or back," Rojas said.

To those who want to stick to one type of carrier, one can use the pouch, Mei-Tai and structured carriers since these can be used for four month-old babies to pre-school-aged children.

Positive parenting

Aside from citing the benefits of babywearing and types of carriers, the MNM also underscored the impact of technology on child sensory and motor development.

Pediatric Occupational Therapist Irish Mae Chiu said young children require 3-4 hours per day of active rough and tumble play to achieve adequate sensory stimulation to their vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile systems for normal development.

"Technology is killing what we love most: the connection with other human beings," Chiu said.

Thus, she encouraged parents to do hugging, playing, rough housing, and conversing with children.

Chiu also highlighted the major effects of too much gadget use of children below 12 years old and these include rapid brain growth, delayed development, epidemic obesity, sleep deprivation, mental illness, aggression, digital dementia, developing addictions and radiation emission.

With the theme, "Painting memories, weaving bonds," the Modern Nanays of Mindanao is one with the world in celebrating the International Babywearing Week, a week-long opportunity to celebrate, promote, advocate for, and focus media attention on the many benefits of babywearing, MNM Founder Nadine Casino said.
