ARKANSAS, United States - Supermarket giant Walmart confirms that it does use image recognition cameras at their checkout counters to spot thieves. This technology is called Missed Scan Detection.
These cameras detect when items are being put in the shopping bag without being scanned by the cashier first or verified at the self-service checkout.
This technology has been adopted in over 1,000 Walmart stores over the last two years. This is the company's investment to promote customer and employee safety. The technology they use is supplied by Ireland-based firm Everseen.
These devices focus on tracking items instead of people. The system notifies employees should it detect items moving past the checkout without getting scanned.
Walmart says that product loss due to error or theft has dramatically decreased since the deployment of these devices.
