CO CORK, Ireland - A man has died after a fire at Mardyke Walk in the early hours of Sunday morning.

As first responders arrived at the scene they found the man unconscious. It is unclear as to the cause of his death, however gardai have confirmed they have opened a homicide investigation.

"Garda in Anglesea Street, Cork were alerted to a fire and an unconscious man at Mardyke Walk in the early hours of this morning Sunday 13th October, 2019," statement from the Garda released later on Sunday said.

"The injured man was removed to Cork University Hospital at approximately 1:00am this morning. The man has since passed away."

"The State Pathologist has been notified and the scene is currently preserved. The post mortem is due to take place this morning," the statement said.

Garda say they are appealing for any persons who were in Mardyke Walk area between 12 midnight and 1am Sunday morning and who may have witnessed any activity in the area or any motorists who may have passed through Mardyle Walk around these times and have Dashcam footage, to contact Anglesea Garda Station on 021 -4522000, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
