CO WESTMEATH - The three men arrested over threats to kill and cause serious harm on social media have been charged, and fronted the Mullingar District Court at 10:30am on Friday.
The men, two in their 20s, and one in his 40s, were arrested on Thursday morning.
Their arrest followed an investigation into a number of threats to kill and cause serious harm to persons.
The threats had been made on social media over the past few days.
On Thursday morning Athlone gardai conducted a number of planned searches in the Athlone area, searching for weapons which were displayed in videos and media devices which filmed the threats. A number of electronic devices and weapons were seized during the searches.
The searches were carried out by Garda resources from Athlone and the Regional Support Unit.
The three men were arrested during the searches. They are all from the Athlone area. They are currently being detained at Mullingar and Athlone Garda Station following their appearance in court on Friday.
Gardai in Athlone say they are are liaising with the PSNI in relation to the men arrested and the social media videos as they may be connected to a recent serious incident in Co. Fermanagh, which is being investigated by the PSNI.
