DUBLIN, Ireland - A major search operation took place on Wednesday morning in Dublin.
Five people have been arrested as a result of the searches, which were carried out by garda attached to the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau assisted by Romanian speaking garda and also garda seconded to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection.
The raids in the north and west of the Dublin Metropolitan Region followed the identification of a number of bogus companies established by a criminal organisation and a large number of bank accounts set up in both false names and money mules.
Garda have established that about €1.5 million was laundered through these accounts. This money is the proceeds of various cyber enabled frauds like 'smishing' and 'vishing', organised prostitution and thefts.
Documentation pertaining to these companies and the bank accounts along with identifications, a large quantity of cash and phones were seized in Wednesday's raids and are being examined.
A total of nine searches were carried out and 5 men were arrested for criminal activity, money laundering and obstruction. The five men are Romanian nationals and are aged in their late 20s and early to mid-30s. Two are being detained at Clontarf and Ballymun Garda Stations, one is being detained at Raheny, another was taken to Swords Garda Station, and the fifth man is now a guest of Store Street Garda Station,
Gardai say investigations are continuing.
