CO CORK, Ireland - A man in his late 80s died from an alleged assault on a hospital ward in County Cork.

Gardai in Cork are investigating all aspects of the elderly man's death following an incident at Mercy University Hospital early Sunday morning.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Gardai were called to a hospital incident involving two male patients.

An investigating Garda arrested a man in his 30s at the scene and took him to Bridewell Garda Station in Cork, where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Garda has stated: "Currently, the scene is being preserved for forensic and technical examination. The Bridewell Garda Station has established an incident room, and the services of the State Pathologist have been requested."

A Garda family liaison officer has been appointed, and the deceased's family has been notified.

Gardai are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.
