The HTA ensures that human tissue is used safely and ethically, with proper consent, and oversees compliance with the Human Tissue Act 2004. It issues licenses and inspects organisations that remove, store, and use human tissue to uphold the standards set by HTA. The HTA operates across six areas: Anatomy, Post Mortem, Public Display, Organ Donation and Transplantation, Research, and Human Application.
The HTA Board is made up of a Chair and 11 Non-Executive Members. The Chair and Non-Executive Board Members, except the Northern Ireland and Wales Members, are appointed by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in England. The Northern Ireland Non-Executive Board Member is appointed by the Department of Health.
