MAYNOOTH, Co. Kildare – A patrol along the Royal Canal Way in Maynooth led to the seizure of two semi-automatic pistols and nearly 40 rounds of ammunition on Wednesday evening, following the interception of a scrambler bike.

Gardaí from the Kildare North Community Engagement unit, supported by local detectives, were carrying out proactive patrols as part of Operation Twin Tracks when they stopped the off-road motorcycle.

During the stop, officers discovered two semi-automatic pistols along with 39 rounds of ammunition. The weapons and ammunition were immediately seized.

A man in his 30s, who was operating the scrambler bike, was arrested at the scene. He is currently being detained at a Garda station in County Kildare under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, which allows for extended detention in cases involving national security or serious crime. He was scheduled to appear before a sitting of Naas District Court at 3:30pm on Thursday.

The seized firearms have been sent for technical and ballistic examination. Investigations are ongoing.
