Draft Climate Action Plan Consultation nears completion
Date published:
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir is encouraging people to have their say on Northern Ireland's first draft Climate Action Plan, before the 16-week public conclusion closes on October 8th.
The draft action plan, a legal requirement of the Climate Change Act, that was passed by the NI Assembly in 2022, sets out the path Northern Ireland will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.
It also demonstrates how Northern Ireland will achieve its first carbon budget target of a 33% average annual reduction between 2023 and 2027 compared to the 1990 baseline.
Minister Muir said: "I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to contribute so far to this important Public Consultation at the 10 public events across Northern Ireland and also at sectoral and online events.
"The Climate Action Plan will shape how we respond to the climate crisis now and in years to come. It's not just a government document, it's a collective effort for a greener, healthier and more sustainable Northern Ireland and we all have a role to play."
Responses from the public to the draft Climate Action Plan survey will influence the final plan that will eventually be laid before the NI Assembly. The 16-week consultation period began on 19th June, with events in every county in Northern Ireland engaging individuals, communities, key sectors such as Waste, Fisheries, and Public Buildings and youth groups.
DAERA has led the development of the draft action plan, coordinating input from across government and society. To complete the survey on the draft Climate Action Plan, visit the DAERA website. There is an online public consultation event tonight (2nd October at 7pm), and people can register to attend at: https://consultations2.nidirect.gov.uk/daera/climate-action-plan-event-booking/.
