MULLINGAR, Co. Westmeath – A man in his 30s has been arrested following two separate robberies at businesses in Mullingar on Sunday afternoon, during which staff were threatened with an implement and assaulted, and cash was stolen.

The first incident took place at a premises on Castle Street around 4:30 p.m. Gardaí said a male suspect entered the shop and threatened staff with a weapon, though nothing was taken from the scene.

Shortly afterward, officers received a second report of a robbery at a business on Canal Court. In that attack, the same suspect allegedly assaulted a member of staff and caused damage to property before making off with a quantity of cash.

Patrolling gardaí carried out enquiries in the local area and arrested the man a short distance from the second crime scene. The stolen money was later recovered.

The suspect is currently being held at a Garda station in Co. Westmeath.

Gardai say investigations are ongoing.
