Over 2,500 Recruits Since 2022 as Latest Garda Class Begins Training

DUBLIN, Ireland - Over 200 new recruits have embarked on their journey to become gardaí, starting training at the Garda College this week.

The 215 trainees, known as Intake 261, began their foundation programme on Monday. Their arrival follows closely on the attestation of 167 new gardaí last Friday, who are now sworn members of An Garda Síochána.

This latest intake brings the total number of recruits currently in training across three classes to 625. Since the recommencement of recruitment post-pandemic in 2022, more than 2,500 trainees have entered the Garda College, with new classes starting every 11 to 12 weeks.

The path to becoming a garda is a rigorous multi-stage process. Candidates first apply through Public Jobs, undergoing online assessments and competency-based interviews. Successful applicants then enter an appointments process run by An Garda Síochána, which includes a physical competence test, medical examination, drug testing, and vetting.

Only after clearing all these stages are candidates invited to begin the 32-week Foundation Training Programme. This training blends academic learning at the Garda College with observational placements in operational stations. Upon completion, recruits are attested and become probationer gardaí.

The continuous intake cycle is part of the ongoing effort to bolster the national force.
